Earlier this week we decided very spontaneously to go camping for 2 days and one night. This may very well be the last summer we can be cool and spontaneous like that and just throw our dogs and tent in the car, stop at the grocery store on our way out of town and head out for a few days. Kids appear to make things like lists (gah) necessary and I am pretty sure we are going to need a bigger vehicle next year if we are expected to bring things like Pack n Play, high chairs, strollers, 10 million (ish) diapers etc, etc, etc, along with us when we go out for more than an hour. Our car is the perfect size for 2 big dogs and us…but not much else.
The days at Shuswap were awesome, as days at Shuswap always are. I’ve always loved camping out there and this time was no exception. (However I must mention that I never thought I would need to pick my ideal spot from the list of available campsites based on the proximity of the washroom?? “Oh no, don’t worry Mr. Park Ranger…we don’t need to go and look at them all before we pick one”. -gazes intently at map- “Yep, this one right here in front of the outhouse doors will be perfect thanks”) We swam in the lake, played with the dogs on the beach, hiked up to Margaret Falls and then hung out playing crib and Yahtzee by the campfire (because we are that cool). Because a certain somebody on the trip, who shall remain nameless, is a moron and forgot to bring the camera with her, we did not get a single picture of all the fun. So we have decided to recreate the trip another time and then when (if) we remember the camera that trip we will take two sets of pictures so one can be from this time.
Maggie decided to give us a taste of what our nights will be like in the future because she is very helpful like that. We were all exhausted after a busy day and went to bed pretty early. All of us were exhausted that is except Maggie who appears to have the energy of Richard Simmons…on crack. Even after all the swimming and running and playing, Maggie was wide awake. Added to the wide awakeness was a previously undiagnosed phobia of tents. I probably should have caught on to her fear when she ran away into the bushes when we first tried to coax her in there. For some reason I was still shocked and somewhat confused when she kept us awake for most of the night, jumping up every single time a light breeze hit the tent (which, let me assure you, was approximately once per millisecond). Her jumping up would have been slightly less noticeable had she been lying almost anywhere else in the tent, but in her fear she suddenly morphed into some sort of cling-on and spent much of the night directly on top of one of us or with me spooning her. I think she finally fell asleep around 2:45 and then I of course had to wake up 15 minutes later to head to the outhouse. Because I am a chicken and because we also forgot to bring a flashlight, B was required to escort me on my 10 foot journey which also meant we had to bring the dogs. An hour later we were all settled again only to have me wake up at my usual 4:30. I was nice though and let B sleep until almost 7 by which time I had started a fire, read an entire book and played about a thousand games of solitaire and was starting to get bored. Needless to say, the second day was not quite as action packed as the first and we were actually quite relieved to pack up and head home where most of us spent the rest of the day sound asleep. Maggie however, has discovered that apples are very similar in shape to tennis balls and spends approximately 23.5 hours a day trying to coax us into throwing them for her.
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for stopping in and visiting all the time. I’m sorry I’ve been kind of a pathetic friend and don’t return the favor much. I will try to do better again I promise!
but I guess that would make it a perfect camping weekend wouldnt it! and up to 36 today!
