Last week a forest fire started very close to our city. There are actually hundreds of fires currently burning in the province, a few of which are unrelenting in the threat to homes. When the fire started just outside of Kamloops, I could tell that B was just vibrating with excitement. It's sad to say that forest fires are exciting but my husband spent years as a forest fire fighter and I could tell that day that he wanted to be there. Two days ago, on our anniversary, he came home from work early and his excitement was barely containable. One of the other city firefighters has a contract with the government for forest fire fighting and they had just declared a state of emergency up around the Williams Lake area. So my husband and 3 of his co-workers were asked to head out...immediately. I could tell he felt a little bad about leaving on our anniversary but he was like a little kid on Christmas, eyes lit up and restless energy driving his every move. I am excited for him but as always, it's a little scary. I was recently going through a powerpoint slide show that one of his old firefighting crew members made after the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire in Kelowna 2003. I will never forget watching those images on tv and knowing B was somewhere right in the middle of it. One night, I heard a breaking news story that there were crews of firefighters trapped by the fire. I freaked out and called their boss's wife, who hadn't heard from them and didn't know what was going on. I learned later that they WERE one of the trapped crews and were forced to escape via the lake. His boss in a later interview said "Oh, we weren't trapped...we just couldn't get out the same way we came in" Even though it terrifies me sometimes to think of him in that kind of danger...I know that he has chosen to be there, he thrives on the excitement, and I am also so proud of him for being one of those brave ones who go in when everyone else is getting out.
I wanted to share a couple of pictures of that 2003 fire with you so hopefully they will work! By the way, you might have noticed my (incomplete) song playing on here now...it's called You Just Might Make Me Believe by Sugarland and it's my song for you, B. Thanks Suna for getting me the code!!

The crew, at rest

Only way out...by water.

It is just amazing to me how close they actually are to fire like this...

That's B, closest to photographer

Some of B's crew...we have a copy of this picture where the pic is in black and white and only the grapes are in color...very cool!

Burned out shell of a house...they managed to save a lot of them but hundreds of houses were burnt down in this fire.

B again (far left)

The High Country Forest and Fire crews. B is around the middle...some of them including B, grew "fire" beards...very similar to playoff beards in that they decided not to shave until the fire was out. They were there for um...3 months.
All pictures were taken by High Country firefighter Kyle Sanguin...a lot of his pics were in the newspapers, calendars and books that were made after the fire and even in the National Library of Canada archives.
