My husband and I first met in high school…one of those bright spots in an otherwise hazy jumble of partying too much and doing things I have spent years trying to forget. The timing was so wrong then, our destinies had other plans for both of us at the time. But 7 years later, fate decided to intervene. It was August of 1998 and a huge fire was threatening the town of Salmon Arm, the town in which I just happened to be living. I will never forget the eeriness of the skies the day the fire exploded into life. I would sit outside on my deck and watch pieces of ash and charred remains of trees dropping at my feet. The town was mostly abandoned as most of us were evacuated, me being one of the last. My parents were out of town so I headed to Kamloops to stay at their place. I was very recently out of a um, very serious relationship and was not much in the mood for a party, but my friend begged and pleaded and cajoled and finally forcibly dragged me out one night. I will never forget that for some reason I said “I’m only going because maybe I’ll see B” I did see B that night and we’ve pretty much been inseparable since. Things might have turned out different and we might have hung out for a night and then gone our separate ways the next day but it just so happened that B was a forest fire fighter at the time and two days later, I was allowed to return home and he was sent to the Salmon Arm fire.

 

After almost five years of being together, I guess it shouldn’t have been a big surprise, but for some reason it was. B was working as a coach in New Jersey and I was back here finishing my degree. He came home for Christmas and one day we were meeting his mom and sister for lunch. On the way, we stopped at the mall to do some Christmas shopping and just happened to pop in to a jewelry story to look at rings. He made a big show about not being interested at all and we laughed it off and headed off to lunch. About 20 minutes later, we were sitting there waiting for family to arrive, when he suddenly pulled out an unmistakable box. Unfortunately, I do not react well under surprising circumstances and when he opened the box, the first thing out of my mouth was “What the hell are you doing with that?????” I realized later that I was so confused because I couldn’t figure out how he had managed to purchase a ring while I was standing right there in the jewelry store with him. Poor guy had actually bought it in New Jersey and said “Actually, I was planning to give it to you and ask you to marry me” Oops…not exactly the most romantic proposal but it was funny and we laughed a lot about it later.

 

So three years ago today, I married my destiny…the guy I had secretly fallen in love with in high school when he was off limits and I was supposed to an uncaring party girl. We had a very casual wedding where no one was allowed to wear a tie and the bride wore a sundress and flip flops. I have to admit, our marriage got off to a rather rocky start. For some reason, more than 5 years of being together didn’t quite prepare us for the reality of marrying each other and we struggled through a few rough patches those first few months. Actually those patches were much more than just rough…we almost didn’t make it…TWICE. But we hung on and here we are today. B was there for me through 5 and a half years of Master’s degree hell and the last year of employment hell. I supported him through his fight to become a firefighter. There have been disappointments and struggles but there has also been joy and love and friendship and the comfort of knowing that you are with the person you are supposed to be with. That you are fulfilling your destiny.  So, Happy Anniversary to us. I had the incredible misfortune of waking up with a wicked headache today and B is working anyway so we won’t get to celebrate much. So this is my celebration…of him and of us. I love you.
