My sister in law is going for her driver's test today. Thanks to the graduated licensing program, she has had her learner's license for a while now. She has also taken several driving lessons and has been dilligently practicing her parallel parking, checking her mirrors, backing up in a straight line (which, despite having my license for 15 years, I have STILL not mastered) and coming to a full and complete stop at all red lights and stop signs. She has waited a long time for this and I think she's feeling fairly confident about her test today. I have been doing my part in being supportive and encouraging and even sat white knuckled through a couple of trips with her as she tried out her skills on me, the human guinea pig. I am wondering if, as part of my much needed support, it's appropriate to remind her before or after her test that even when you have practiced all you can and learned from the professionals and come home with your shiny new license in your sweaty little palm, things can still go very very wrong. So wrong in fact that just a few short months later when you drive your dad's truck directly through the front doors of the school and everyone inside tells you afterwards that it was like slow motion and the garbage can that sat undisturbed for years right inside the front doors went flying across the floor before the doors and windows caved in... your driving instructor will very inconveniently be sitting outside in the parking lot waiting for her next eager student and she will say something like "Please do not tell anyone I taught you how to drive"
